DMAA (dimethylamylamine)

DMAA (dimethylamylamine) is a stimulant that is often being advertised and recommended for weight loss, muscle building and better performance. The FDA is planning to cut all sales of DMAA, saying that it is dangerous due to raising blood pressure and possibly causing cardiovascular problems including heart attacks. It seems to be especially dangerous when used with caffeine.

The FDA says that it has received 86 reports of illness and death related to supplements containing DMAA.

DMAA can show up on product (such as popular weight lifting supplements like Jack3D) labels as any of the following:

  • 1,3-DMAA
  • 1,3-Dimethylamylamine
  • 1,3-Dimethylpentylamine
  • 2-Amino-4-methylhexane
  • 2-Hexanamine
  • 4-Methyl-2-hexanamine
  • 4-Methyl-2-hexylamine
  • 4-methyl- (9CI)
  • Dimethylamylamine
  • Geranamine
  • Methylhexanamine
  • Methylhexanenamine

Some products also will list Pelargonium graveolens extract or Geranium extract
